As the excitement grows and you begin to pull out the holiday decorations, always remember that when you put something out you must take something away. Otherwise, the decorations and the "regular accessories" will clutter your vignette or display. You want people to see the manger scene or the santa display or the carollers. Don't let it compete with your other accessories.
Also, keep in mind this decorator tip: Grouping things together has more impact than items spread out. So, if you collect snowmen, santas, angels, whatever, there will be more attention brought to those items if they are placed in a nice group.

I think that remembering to "take something away" is a great idea. Our holiday decorating also often involves moving a few pieces of furniture around as well!
